I once wrote a paper for a film class entitled “kissing fingertips: queer erotica (or lack thereof) in mainstream cinema”. The joke began with my disgusted response to how Antonio Banderas passionately kissed Tom Hanks’ fingertips in Jonathan Demme’s Philadelphia. This idea grew when I realised that an awful lot of lesbian desire on film and TV was being expressed through longing looks and the kissing of hands or fingertips. While the situation is a lot better now than it was then, the joke remains, and hence the name.
